The Haiti Constitution of 1801 was declared
Under the 1801 constitution of what would later become the Republic of Haiti, Toussaint Louverture was to be Governor General for life. The new Haitian constitution was sent to Napoleon Bonaparte by a special messenger, Colonel Vincent. Napoleon was outraged, so he send his brother in Law General Charles Leclerc to crush Toussaint Louverture, retake control of the colony of Saint domingue, and to reestablish slavery there.
