January 5th 2007 Haitian Heritage Museum project was submitted for aproval to the Florida House of Representative. Haitian Heritage Museum Project Description: The Haitian Heritage Museum is proposing to develop an approximately 20,000 square foot structure that will facilitate a diverse series of program functions. The first, and most prominent, will be the Museum component which will feature a variety of spaces that hosts fine Haitian visual arts exhibitions, and an area that accommodates the historic, and contemporary Haitian literary works. Second, a major section that will facilitate community participation is the Artist's loft component where art students from local as well as international communities will engage in a museum based learning curriculum rich in Haitian Arts/ Culture. The structure will also feature a media center where another dimension of Haiti's rich artistic culture can be expressed through the medium of film. The final program component is the mixed-use component that will host an array of sidewalk friendly shops, and a restaurant that are congruent to the Haitian Heritage Museum theme. Funds are being requested in the amount of $1,000,000 to be applied toward costs of construction in the remodeling, and expansion of the existing property. It is estimated that the project will have a construction duration of approximately 18 months with an anticipated completion date by second quarter of 2008.
