Toussaint Louverture was born a slave on the Breda Plantation, so it is said.

History shows that Toussaint Louverture is the grand son of the African King of Arada. Some say that Francois Dominique Toussaint was born on May 20th 1746.

Some say that "Breda" was the name of the estate on which he was born, hence his name Francois Dominique Toussaint Breda.

Some say Toussaint Louverture was an ancien libre or freed slave of long standing from Plaine du Nord; however, others believe Toussaint Louverture was born in au Haut du Cap on the Habitation of the Comte de Noé to his father Hippolite and mother Pauline but...

Noone seem to deny the fact that Tousaint Louverture was the son of an Arada Prince called Gaou-Ginou, one reason why some people want to call him "Toussaint Guinou Louverture" the African Prince "born in captivity", unless you believe the other rumor that his godfather, Pierre Baptiste Simon, was actually his real father!

Anyway, here is the royal story of Toussaint Louverture the one I like:

In 1724, the King of Arada died leaving two sons. Older brother Hussar, and younger brother Gaou Guinou. The King-Conqueror Agadja Dossou, King Of Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin), invaded the Kingdom of Arada and Prince Hussar disapeared.

Prince Gaou Ginou, who was heir to the throne of Arada, chose to accompany his vanquished soldiers in exile instead of succeding his father to the throne of Arada. On that year of 1724, Saint Domingue received 10 to 12.000 slaves largely coming from Arada. Amongst the slaves was Prince Gaou Ginou. When the slaves arrived in Saint Domingue, Prince Gaou Guinou was baptized "Hyppolite" and he was sold to the Comte de Noé in the North of Saint Domingue.

Hippolite (Prince Gaou Guinou) had a wife and two children.

His wife, daughter of King Affiba, King of the Aguias, was baptized Catherine when she arrived in Saint Domingue.

Catherine (Gaou Ginou's wife and princess of Aguias) and the two kids were sold to Mr. De La Fontaine, near aux Cayes. Hippolite (Prince Gaou Guinou) married another woman named Pauline.

Hippolite and Pauline had five children: Francois Dominique Toussaint, the eldest born, Jean Baptiste, Marie-Noel, the other one is known as Mrs Claude Martin whose husband was a colonel, and the youngest was named Gaou because, it is said, he looked so much like his grand father, the king of Arada. There you have it, Toussaint was not born a slave in the breda Plantation on May 20, 1743. Toussaint Louverture was born a free man, the eldest son of Prince Gaou Guinou (Hippolite), heir to the throne of Arada.
