Venerable Pierre Toussaint officially received his freedom from his former master Marie Elisabeth Bérard.
Pierre Toussaint, born a Haitian slave in Haiti, will soon be declared a saint by the catholic church. Pierre Toussaint is the only lay person buried in the crypt below St Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue in New York with all the deceased archbishops and cardinal archbishops of New York. The documents proposing Pierre Toussaint’s canonization now lie in the Vatican awaiting the two miracles needed to make him officially a saint.
